Great Sand Dunes National ParkGreat Sand Dunes National ParkGreat Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is located on a large area of High Desert land in the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado (USA). The sand dunes rise approximately 750 feet above the valley floor and are tallest sand dunes in North America, covering about 19,000 acres. The dunes were formed from sand and soil deposits of the Rio Grande and its tributaries, flowing through the San Luis Valley. Photo by James C. McDaniel III. During our trip to Colorado, we traveled a few hours south of Denver to the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve.  The Great Sand Dunes, should be called the Great Sand Mountains. They are huge! We really enjoyed hiking the Great Sand Dunes, but it was exhausting climbing the hills.  We stayed at the Great Sand Dunes Lodge, which provided a view of the Sand Dunes from all the rooms and easy access to the park in the morning.  While in the park we ate at the Great Sand Dunes Oasis restaurant, which is the only restaurant for several miles, but the food was very good. You can see our review of the Great Sand Dunes Lodge and the Oasis restaurant at our Trip Advisor link at the bottom of this page.

Recommendations - Go early in the day, because gets hot and the park fills up fast.  Also be prepared for mosquitos and to do a shallow water crossing to get to the sand dunes. This is a definite must see if you love the outdoors.  Highly recommended.  Can't wait to go back.

Here are a few highlights of the trip.
